Phoenix Sport Utility Truck

Phoenix Motorcars has been around since 2001, making them one of the oldest of all Automotive X Prize teams. Their all-electric Sport Utility Truck (SUT) got a lot of press early 2007 when it was announced, but progress since then has been slower than they had planned. At 126 MPGe on electricity, they are more constrained by the CO2e requirement of the AXP than by the MPGe requirement. The Phoenix SUT is one of the few mainstream class competitors that already has operating vehicles - an advantage which is hard to overstate with the qualifying race only a little over a year away. Check out the Phoenix SUT page, or read on for the same information presented via HTML.
Short Description: EV pickup truck
Availability & Cost: 2008, $47k
Background and Details
  • Car bodies are based on Korean SsangYong Actyon
  • The carbon fiber drive shaft (5lbs vs. 75) is surrounded by the batteries, in a large metal tray
  • They are working on an extended battery pack which will allow 200 mile range, preserving 10 minute quick charge
  • They also have an SUV which has extremely similar stats: it is possible the only difference is the body shape
  • SUT is targeted at fleet sales in 2008
  • New custom (in-house) motor replaces a UQM unit which was about half as powerful
  • PG&E (a California electric utility) is initial fleet customer
  • In addition to Altairnano, Phoenix is working with Electrovaya for a battery pack, perhaps for the larger one?
  • Initial production quantities appear delayed by ~one year, with 500 planed now for 2008 and 6000 in 2009
