Roane Inventions TriTrack

The TriTrack is a "personal rapid transit" (PRT) type vehicle, capable of both travel on regular streets and on an elevated monorail. The monorail would be triangular in shape (hence "TriTrack"), as would be the "mules" which slot into the same space in the vehicle and allow travel on surface streets. Although the existing plans call for mules only capable of Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) performance (25 MPH top speed), presumably for the race they will be constructing mules with far better performance and range. This will be necessary since the rules make it pretty clear that only existing infrastructure can be used, and it's highly unlikely that 10 US cities will have a network of triangular monorails by 2010 :-). Anyway, interesting vehicle concept, check out the Roane Inventions TriTrack page (PDF) or read on for the same information presented in HTML.
Short Description: dual-mode (road, monorail) 4-seat EV
Status & Cost: <$10k/vehicle, $150k/mile of track
Background and Details
  • The TriTrack is a dual-mode vehicle - it runs on regular streets by using a battery mule, or on an elevated monorail
  • A large machine called the “TriTracker” can build the elevated rail at 3 miles/hour, for <$150k/mile
  • All rails are straight - there will be a network of North/South and East/West rails; all interchanges and merging are done with battery mules on streets at low speed
  • When merging unto elevated rails, the mule is left behind to charge, and a linear induction rail motor accelerates the car. The car motor and onboard battery maintain rail speed
  • The four seats are cramped, with ‘recombinant’ posture
  • Steering is accomplished via a ‘tiller’, like on small boats
  • For the purposes of the AXP, they will have to race without any rails, but current mule only achieves NEV performance
