Tilting Vehicle Australia
The Tilting Vehicle Australia team is still in the early stages of development - they have a mule, and a concept drawing (by Mateus Furtado), but much of the design work lies ahead. Their innovative tilting technology is their competitive advantage - using it, they can make their vehicle narrow and light, and that gets them a long way towards 100 MPGe. Check out the new Tilting Vehicle Australia page. I also traveled to the Detroit Auto Show last week, and recorded this:
X Prize Cars Episode 1: Tilting Vehicle Australia
(download MP3). It's an interview with Aaron Davenport, their North American regional consultant. Since it's the first episode, it's a little rough around the edges, but I am pleased and I think you'll agree that Aaron has some very interesting things to say!
Short Description: narrow, tilting 3-wheel, tandem seating
Status & Cost: Alternative class, no production details

Background and Details
- Few details on the actual vehicle are available
- An engineering mule (right picture) has been built in Australia, which proves the tilting technology
- Basic vehicle concept: narrow and light to achieve 100 MPGe, tilting technology makes this vehicle safe and drivable without motorcycle skills or risks
- Enclosure vastly improves aerodynamics over motorcycles
- Tilting technology involves “drive by wire”: steering wheel adjusts tilt of the vehicle rather than wheel orientation, and the system automatically counter-steers when required
- Although the concept design shows four wheels, the team anticipates commercializing a 3-wheel vehicle first
- Be sure to watch the videos on the TvA website
- Philip James, the Australian inventor, has spent years - the prototype has been around since at least 2005.

Philip has been 'knocking' other TILTERS's systems and their slow progress in producing actual vehicles for years. It is good that he has finally thrown his 'hat in the ring'; and hope to see his entry compete in the AXP.
