Society for Sustainable Mobility Kernel SUV
The Society for Sustainable Mobility (SSM) is bringing the Open Source Green Vehicle (OSGV) Kernel SUV to the Automotive X Prize. It seats seven and the design information will be available to all on the website. You too can volunteer to help! Check out our SSM/OSGV Kernel page or read on for the same information in a less pretty format.

Background and Details
- SSM is partnered with the Open Source Green Vehicle project. In this case Open Source means that the vehicle design (including CAD files, electrical schematics, BOMs, etc) will be shared with the public on the website.
- Design calls for modular “range extending” system: they plan to have CNG, LNG, FuelCell, ethanol, etc modules
- They had 150 volunteers world-wide as of Oct’07
- Unfortunately, the idea that a heavy, non-aerodynamic SUV could achieve 100 MPGe is likely a non-starter - the physics just do not work (see the car equation). In short, what is their concept for improving the efficiency of an SUV five+ fold?
