GM Chevy Volt
The Chevy Volt is the most marketed of the new generation vehicles - GM has spent a small fortune on TV ads. And it shows in the level of interest people are expressing - alone among such concept cars, the Chevy Volt has its own independent community discussion site at GM-Volt.com. GM has stated numerous times now that it is committed to bringing this vehicle to market in large numbers. XPrizeCars feels that even though the vehicle does not achieve 100+ MPGe, we had to have a page for this vehicle. So here it is: Chevy Volt. Or read on for a less pretty version of the same information.
Short Description: 4-seat, series PHEV40, li-ion batteries

Background and Details
- GM has spent a lot on marketing this vehicle already
- GM VP Bob Lutz says they are committed to producing this vehicle, in large numbers (100k+)
- As of Dec 2007, it is the only announced series PHEV from a major automotive manufacturer
- GM is calling it an “E-REV”, extended-range electric vehicle. They like the marketing possibilities of “REV”
- The aerodynamics of the concept car (shown above) are so terrible that GM warns the looks/styling will change.
- The plug location (side) looks strange but is closer to driver exit and has better snow/dirt behavior than bumper
- GM has said that the vehicle will not ‘innovate’ in weight for Version 1: it will be a steel car with typical GM parts. This reduces the amount of R&D to be done and lowers the risk and cost. GMs is serious about a low-risk attitude
- GM has not officially entered the AXP. Could they modify this vehicle to reach 100 MPG for the race?
